All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
More than "The Nutcracker Suite" frequently excerpted from the 1892 Tchaikovsky ballet but less than the entire work, this budget-priced album of highlights includes ten of the 15 sections. Working with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, conductor Peter Wohlert brings out the verve and playfulness of the piece, focusing on the memorable melodies in the "No. 12 Divertissement" section and in "No. 13 Waltz of the Flowers." The result is an album that should please more casual fans of classical music during the Christmas holidays. Note that, while the album does run 63 minutes, as stated on the back cover, the final track, "No. 15 Closing Waltz and Grand Finale" has a running time of five-minutes-and-seven-seconds, not eleven-minutes-and-fifty-nine-seconds, as shown.
